I just read this article about BAE future plans for the Typhoon and did not a get a warm and fuzzy about their concept to create an AI (Artificial Intelligence) wingman. I did however like the idea of creating a link to ground pilot’s stations to enhance the capability of the fighter without a huge investment in AI. To be honest the first thought I had was about trust. Trust in AI systems, trust in a virtual link and trust in a co-pilot a few thousand miles away. If trust can be achieved this virtual co-pilot concept could prove to be the next step in fighter tech. In the end though, I think we are heading for a 100% UAV future for everything but crew transport.
